Letter from the Head of School – 19 May 2017

By Head of School Valerie Thomas-Peter

Between now and the end of the school year we will be giving you details of the new staff who will be joining us in August 2017.

Some of the posts are replacements for teachers who are leaving us this summer but six are additional teachers (three of whom are in the Primary School and three in the Secondary School) who are filling newly created positions.

Here are short biographies for some of our new staff, in alphabetical order. We will publish more bios from our new teachers for both Primary and Secondary next week.

For more information, please contact: hmsec@bkkprep.ac.th

Martyn Chadderton – Key Stage 2 Teacher

Hello, my name is Martyn Chadderton and I am excited to join the community at Bangkok Prep this summer. I will arrive with my wife and two children, who are equally excited by the move to Thailand.

After a successful career as a solicitor, I completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of Southampton and fulfilled my lifelong ambition to teach. Since entering the profession, I have been fortunate to teach in a selection of good and outstanding schools in Hampshire in the UK and more recently, two years teaching in Key Stage 2 at a leading international school in Shanghai, China.

My biggest passion is technology. As well as playing with new gadgets outside the classroom, I love sharing my passion with my students, to ensure they become confident and responsible users of technology. I am fascinated by how technology can support and improve teaching and learning.

As a family, we love travelling, exploring new places and new foods and love nothing more than a road trip. We are looking forward to exploring Bangkok and the rest of Thailand.

Rebecca Chalmers – Foundation / Key Stage 1 Teacher

I am very much looking forward to entering my 9th year as a teacher with the Bangkok Prep community. I started life as a teacher at the University of Brighton, from there experiencing a village school, an inner city London school and, for the last three years, an international school in Bangkok. Thailand has had a place in my heart for over 10 years now, there is a lot to learn from the people, the culture and the language. I have a passion for learning through play and, as well as helping young children develop, another passion in my life is yoga. I am a fully qualified yoga teacher and love the strength, release and peace it brings to mind and body.

Katerina Chiponda – French/Spanish Teacher

My name is Katerina Chiponda and I am extremely excited about the opportunity of joining Bangkok Prep and introducing Spanish to the school.

For the past 3 years I have been working in Solwezi, Zambia as French and Spanish Teacher and boarding Housemistress. Prior to this I worked in Birmingham and Nottingham in the UK. I am a passionate and enthusiastic teacher who loves helping students discover new languages and cultures. I have taught both French and Spanish at Primary and Secondary level and I am also very involved in many co-curricular activities and trips, helping to enthuse pupils even further.

I trained as a teacher through Teach First in the UK, after gaining a BA (Hons) in Contemporary European Studies (French & Spanish) with Marketing from the University of Nottingham. I later gained a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Warwick.

In my free time I love to run and completed my first marathon last year at Victoria Falls! Also, since living in Zambia I have begun to enjoy baking and have taken up sewing, creating some of my own clothes from the gorgeous chitenge material that is found here.

Hugh Conway – Key Stage 4 Leader

My name is Hugh Conway and I am delighted to be joining the Bangkok Prep community this August. I have accepted the role of Key Stage 4 Leader and I’m looking forward to working alongside Mr Wilsonlock and the whole secondary team in ensuring that the transition to the new campus is both smooth and successful for all concerned. What an exciting time to join the school!

I presently work as Assistant Headteacher in County Durham, England, and I have a wealth of experience in all aspects of school, both academic and pastoral, to bring with me to Bangkok. I enjoy travelling, socialising and swimming but my main interest and passion lies in the theatre.

I have had the pleasure of producing many shows which have played at theatres across the UK, including work with the National Youth Music Theatre at Newcastle Theatre Royal. I look forward to supporting the creative team at Bangkok Prep with the productions and concerts across all phases of the school, making the best use of all our wonderful new facilities.

I am very much looking forward to moving to Thailand to take up my post, as well as finding time to explore this beautiful part of the world.

David Cooke – Key Stage 2 Teacher

My name is David Cooke and I am very excited about joining Bangkok Prep as a Key Stage 2 teacher in the coming academic year. I began my teaching career almost 10 years ago in London and have worked in a range of different schools since, including inner-city schools in London, Seoul and Bangkok.

I love teaching project-based assignments and challenging my students to try and develop new skills. I’m originally from Cornwall, England and grew up in a small town close to the ocean. In my free time I love to play guitar, read and enjoy exercise outside as much as possible.

Clair Couper – Key Stage 2 Teacher

Hello! I am excited to introduce myself to Bangkok Prep, and can’t wait to meet my class.  I am a Key Stage Two teacher who is currently teaching Year 5 in London, where I have been for three years. Before I became a teacher, I worked as a teaching assistant and actually trained to be a midwife.

When I am not teaching, I am a passionate reader and enjoy learning about history and other cultures. I also enjoy travel, and adventure sports such as surfing and canoeing. Having heard so much about the Thai people, and the beauty of the country, I can’t wait to make the move.
