Biology Intermediate Olympiad - Bangkok Prep

Biology Intermediate Olympiad

At the end of last term 16 of our students took part in the Biology Intermediate Olympiad. This is a competition organised by the UK Biology Competitions Committee and administered by the Royal Society of Biology.

The Royal Society of Biology aims to contribute to the creation of a world that understands the true value of Biology and how it can contribute to improving life for all, whether that is in healthcare, climate change, food security or alternative energy sources.

This competition is open to students in the first year of post-16 education anywhere in the world and consists of a one-hour multiple choice online paper.

The questions are set on topics students are likely to have covered at GCSE and in their first year of A level and asks students to use their biological intuition, logic and imagination to answer them. Some additional ideas are also introduced that require students to use their problem solving skills and understanding of core biological principles.

This competition really encourages students to continue their study of biology outside of the classroom and broaden their understanding of science.

Participation in the competition is something that our students should be incredibly proud of, and also helps our students to stand out when applying for Science-related degrees at University.

This year Over 12,566 students from 608 schools worldwide took part in the competition and are extremely proud of all of our participating Bangkok Prep students. We also saw some fantastic results, including 2 Gold, 1 Silver and 6 Bronze awards.

Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards were given to the top scoring 30% of students entered, Silver and Gold to the top scoring 15% and any student awarded Gold had to achieve above 74.39%, with only 5% of participants in the Biology Intermediate Olympiad achieving this!

This Tuesday we had a small celebration of all of our students’ successes and presentation of the certificates, where Miss Court-Smith awarded all of the students with their medals. Please join us in congratulating our amazing Biologists!

All of our participating students have also been rewarded with a one year subscription to BioNet to allow them to further explore areas of interest, add depth to topics studied in school, and stay connected with modern Science.

This is the last of our Biology Olympiad Competitions for the academic year 2021-2022 but we look forward to this year’s competitions and can’t wait to see how our students do.
