David Bassett – Meet our Teachers

Welcome to the fourth of our Meet our Teachers series for this academic year. This week we meet David Bassett, our new Year 6 Teacher, to learn some more about him:

Hello everyone, my name is Mr Bassett and I am joining the Bangkok Prep Year 6 team all the way from Southampton in the U.K. I am moving into my fifth year of teaching and I am very excited to be starting my first international teaching position.

Prior to teaching, I completed a Creative Writing degree and taught at hospital schools in Southampton before becoming an LSA in Early Years. At the same time, I taught Irish Dance classes under the Blair McCarthy School where I helped train children to compete at an international level.

In my spare time, I like to travel and volunteer at wildlife sanctuaries around the world. So far, I have volunteered in Zimbabwe, India and of course, Thailand. As well as this, I like to run, go out for coffee and also Irish Dance myself (when I get an ounce of spare time). Writing continues to be a passion of mine since leaving university and since then, I have published my own book in aid of wildlife charities and have worked alongside some companies such as WWF and BBC Wildlife Magazine.

I am extremely excited to be joining a friendly and fantastic community. Let’s make this year a fabulous one to remember!

What made you want to embark upon a teaching career? Was there a particular moment or experience?

I first started teaching at the age of 14. I began by teaching Irish Dance alongside my own teacher and loved it from day one. I then went on to volunteer in schools and hospital schools, working with children who had special needs and illnesses. Finally, I trained to be a primary teacher after a year of being an LSA in Early Years, whilst teaching children Irish Dance to an international level in my spare time.

What inspired you to apply for the role of Head of DSL?

My family have been foster carers for over seven years and on top of this, I have always had children in my class with extreme behavioural needs, special needs and safeguarding concerns. I feel like I am now in the position to perform the role due to my experience in varied backgrounds of safeguarding as well as the high-level cases I have encountered.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I like that every single day is different and that the job continually challenges me. The children make the job fun and exciting and I have always enjoyed working with large groups of friendly people, which Bangkok Prep certainly has.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy keeping fit by going to the gym and running. I have been writing now for over 7 years so I would like to get back into that now that I have settled into living in Bangkok. As well as this, I like participating in charitable work and socialising with my friends over a coffee.

Early Years

At Bangkok Prep, the Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework of England, emphasizing thematic topics and child-led learning for a stimulating and enjoyable school experience. It nurtures learning through play and focuses on developing concepts, skills, and positive attitudes across various areas including personal, social, emotional, communication, language, physical, literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world, and expressive arts and design. The curriculum prioritizes individualized learning, ensuring continuous progress while maintaining confidence and a can-do attitude. Specialist sessions in Thai language and culture, music, library, physical education, and swimming further enhance learning opportunities. Supervised by native English teachers and Thai-speaking teaching assistants, children immerse in language acquisition through the immersion method, preparing them for the international community. The Early Years program prioritizes outdoor learning environments, valuing them as essential for children’s wellbeing and development. It serves as ideal preparation for the transition into primary school and provides resources for parents on the Foundation Years website.

Secondary School

Bangkok Prep prides itself on being a distinct international secondary school in Bangkok, prioritizing student needs and providing a stimulating learning environment. Central to this is the pastoral system, where each student is assigned to a tutor group led by a Form Tutor, ensuring personalized care and support. The curriculum evolves to meet students’ changing needs, offering a core curriculum supplemented by option subjects as students mature. Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) focuses on a broad curriculum adapted from the English National Curriculum, fostering personal growth. In Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11), students choose option subjects alongside a core curriculum, culminating in IGCSE examinations. Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13) sees students specialize in Advanced Level courses while also engaging in a core curriculum and receiving support for university applications. Bangkok Prep fosters a warm, inclusive community and actively participates in regional competitions and events. The school encourages student involvement and leadership, ensuring a thriving learning environment. Contact information is provided for further inquiries.
