Day of the Dead – El Día de los Muertos

This week we have been learning loads about “El Día de los Muertos” or Day of the Dead. During our World Languages lessons, we have experienced the festivity celebrated mainly in Mexico but also important in other Spanish speaking countries. There have been different activities, from listening to typical Mexican songs for this special day, decorating Catrina masks, to participating in a Catrina Mask Competition!

During this time of the year, November 1st and 2nd, people from Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries believe that our dead relatives’ souls can come and visit us at home! The family that is no longer here with us, becomes more important than ever and, to let them know that we still love them and think of them, we celebrate that both worlds (alive and dead) can come together and eat yummy foods like “El Pan de Muerto”, drink hot chocolate and be reunited! Marigold flowers, candles and photographs of our families are very important during these days too!

If you wish to learn more about “El Día de los Muertos” we recommend you to watch the movie “Coco” where you will see very well how they celebrate it!
