Día de los Muertos Day of the Dead - Bangkok Prep

Día de los Muertos Day of the Dead – A Celebration of Life at Secondary!

(see English translation below)

Day of the Dead – A celebration of life!

This week, the World Languages Faculty celebrated Day of the Dead.

On this day, in each class in the faculty, students learnt about this important and influential tradition. They had the opportunity to discover the different parts of this festival in which people remember family and friends who have died.

In the Spanish classes we spoke about the ‘Ofrenda’ or altar, the significance of colour, the skulls and other things that are found on the ofrenda. We coloured in skulls and sang Spanish songs that celebrate this day. All had the opportunity to see our altar, and even toast to the deceased together. Some students also put photos or the name of their loved ones who are no longer with us on the altar. Furthermore, during lunch time, many students came to watch the famous film ‘Coco’ which is about Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

Day of the Dead is not a sad tradition – on the contrary, it’s a celebration of life! It’s an opportunity to remember and honour the dead. It is celebrated on the 1st and 2nd of November each year, mainly in Mexico, but also in other Latin American countries and in the USA. Many people often confuse Day of the Dead with Halloween as they are celebrated at the same time, however they are very different traditions which have different roots and meanings. Day of the Dead is a time to celebrate, honour and think about the lives of our loved ones with family, and we were very happy to have been able to share this with our students.
