Evolving Teaching Methods: How International Schools Are Innovating Education

In the modern international classroom, you will likely find teaching methods that you and I might not have been accustomed to as children. International schools are constantly evolving to stay up-to-date with pedagogical methodologies to provide children with the best possible opportunities in life. To understand how international schools are redefining education, we want to share seven teaching practices that are likely shaping your child’s learning environment. 1 – The Holistic Approach: This approach focuses on enhancing a child’s development across all areas. Seeing as children have emotional, intellectual, and physical needs, international schools understand the necessity to nurture their growth in all areas, creating an environment of self-discovery and addressing their well-being as well as academic achievement. 2 – The Student-Centred Approach: This teaching philosophy has spread across schools worldwide. Traditional teaching methods were teacher-centric, meaning the knowledge was transmitted from the learning facilitator to the students. However, with a student-centred approach, students set their own goals, explore topics of interest, and take ownership of their learning journey, promoting student engagement and improving their learning experience. 3 – Learning Through Play: One of the most progressive teaching practices is incorporating play into learning. This method fosters a child’s imagination and creativity and helps them become problem solvers. Play-based learning includes hands-on activities, experimentation, and exploration, creating a meaningful and fun environment for young learners. 4 – Project-Based Learning: International learning environments usually follow this powerful method. Traditional learning would have children focus on memorising facts and taking standardised tests. In contrast, a project-based approach means students work on real-world projects that often require critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. This also helps them transfer their skills and knowledge to other situations they are likely to encounter throughout their learning or future employment. 5 – Differentiation and Personalised Learning – A great thing about international schools is that they embrace diversity. Recognising the unique learning needs of students means they employ differentiation strategies tailored to each student’s individual abilities and interests. Through personalised learning, facilitators can adapt content, pacing, and methods to accommodate everyone’s needs and preferences. 6 – The Restorative Approach: This approach fosters a positive classroom environment where students develop tremendous strength in empathy, conflict resolution, and respect. Due to the diversity of international schools, it is essential to create an all-inclusive environment where students know how to repair harm, build relationships, and treat each other. 7 – Gaining Global Perspectives: International schools provide students with a unique and incredible opportunity to gain global perspectives through international exchanges, celebrating multicultural diversity, and participating in interdisciplinary studies. Almost every student’s engagement with a peer or member of the faculty will help enhance their worldview, giving them intercultural competence and a broad understanding of the world. This is a sure way for students to become extraordinarily well-rounded individuals.

Early Years

At Bangkok Prep, the Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework of England, emphasizing thematic topics and child-led learning for a stimulating and enjoyable school experience. It nurtures learning through play and focuses on developing concepts, skills, and positive attitudes across various areas including personal, social, emotional, communication, language, physical, literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world, and expressive arts and design. The curriculum prioritizes individualized learning, ensuring continuous progress while maintaining confidence and a can-do attitude. Specialist sessions in Thai language and culture, music, library, physical education, and swimming further enhance learning opportunities. Supervised by native English teachers and Thai-speaking teaching assistants, children immerse in language acquisition through the immersion method, preparing them for the international community. The Early Years program prioritizes outdoor learning environments, valuing them as essential for children’s wellbeing and development. It serves as ideal preparation for the transition into primary school and provides resources for parents on the Foundation Years website.

Secondary School

Bangkok Prep prides itself on being a distinct international secondary school in Bangkok, prioritizing student needs and providing a stimulating learning environment. Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13) sees students specialize in Advanced Level courses while also engaging in a core curriculum and receiving support for university applications.
