How Parental Involvement Enhances Student Success in International Schools

We all want our children to do well. Whether socially, emotionally, or academically, we do whatever we can to enhance their success. Today, we would like to talk about how parental involvement can play a tremendous role in student success and discuss what parents can do to give them the support they need. At International schools, students face unique challenges, and parental involvement is essential to ensure they are doing the best they can.

Five Benefits Parental Involvement Has on Students in International Schools

  1. Provides support: Parental involvement is a brilliant way to foster a supportive environment for students throughout their educational journey. When parents are engaged in the education of their children, they feel valued and motivated to persevere and excel. Children need to feel that their parents are genuinely interested in what they are achieving, and when they do, they are far more likely to succeed.
  2. Enhances well-being: When a parent shows interest in student learning, it also enhances their social and emotional well-being. Having a solid support system at home and school ensures children can express their frustrations, navigate difficulties, and build resilience through positive coping strategies. Additionally, this supportive foundation can massively encourage children to always try their best.
  3. Teaches Values: Parental involvement also demonstrates a powerful commitment to lifelong learning and values. Parental enthusiasm shows children the importance of their work and helps them set high standards for personal, educational, and professional growth. The more parental support a student receives, the more they are committed to continuous improvement.
  4. Improves Communication: Parental involvement demonstrates the importance of effective communication. When parents collaborate with teachers, school staff, and their children, it is easier to address the needs, strengths, and challenges the student is facing. Additionally, the more we communicate with our children, the easier they will find communicating throughout the rest of their learning journey and beyond.
  5.  Promotes Awareness and Understanding: International schools are renowned for being culturally diverse, so the more a parent is involved, the more we promote an environment of awareness, appreciation, and understanding.

Ways Parents Can Support Their Child’s Learning Journey

Understandably, parents might not have the time to dedicate one hundred percent of their day to their children’s education. However, many ways exist to support their learning and promote their well-being and academic excellence. Here is a list of ways parents can get involved in their children’s education in an international school environment.
  • Check-in regularly with teachers
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences
  • Help out at school events
  • Set up a study area at home
  • Read to your child regularly
  • Engaging in meaningful conversations about school
  • See if you can help with their homework
  • Participate in school committees
  • Celebrate your child’s achievements as often as possible
  • As well as asking about their day, tell them about yours

Early Years

At Bangkok Prep, the Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework of England, emphasizing thematic topics and child-led learning for a stimulating and enjoyable school experience. It nurtures learning through play and focuses on developing concepts, skills, and positive attitudes across various areas including personal, social, emotional, communication, language, physical, literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world, and expressive arts and design. The curriculum prioritizes individualized learning, ensuring continuous progress while maintaining confidence and a can-do attitude. Specialist sessions in Thai language and culture, music, library, physical education, and swimming further enhance learning opportunities. Supervised by native English teachers and Thai-speaking teaching assistants, children immerse in language acquisition through the immersion method, preparing them for the international community. The Early Years program prioritizes outdoor learning environments, valuing them as essential for children’s wellbeing and development. It serves as ideal preparation for the transition into primary school and provides resources for parents on the Foundation Years website.

Secondary School

Bangkok Prep prides itself on being a distinct international secondary school in Bangkok, prioritizing student needs and providing a stimulating learning environment. Central to this is the pastoral system, where each student is assigned to a tutor group led by a Form Tutor, ensuring personalized care and support. The curriculum evolves to meet students’ changing needs, offering a core curriculum supplemented by option subjects as students mature. Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) focuses on a broad curriculum adapted from the English National Curriculum, fostering personal growth. In Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11), students choose option subjects alongside a core curriculum, culminating in IGCSE examinations. Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13) sees students specialize in Advanced Level courses while also engaging in a core curriculum and receiving support for university applications. Bangkok Prep fosters a warm, inclusive community and actively participates in regional competitions and events.
