International Day of Zero Waste - March 30th - Bangkok Prep

International Day of Zero Waste – March 30th

Background: On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly decided to make  The International Day of Zero Waste a yearly event.  This is the second year and is a day to remind all of us about the huge amount of waste we produce. Did you know, if packed into standard shipping containers and placed end-to-end, municipal solid waste generated in one year would wrap around the globe 25 times? Rotting food, plastic bottles, chemical-laced electronics and much more is tossed away without regard for our water, land and air.  Without urgent action, municipal solid waste generation will increase to 3.8 billion tons annually by 2050.

So, what can we do to reduce our waste?

Reducing our waste will not only mean less rubbish but it will also help the fight against plastic in our oceans and reduce the amount of waste going into landfills.

Try to make reducing waste a fun activity the whole family can get involved in.   You could try collecting all of your waste over a short period, eg one week, to see just how much you throw away in that time.  Separate your waste into things you can recycle, and try to reuse things as much as you can.  Always try to take a reusable bag with you or a reusable coffee cup.  Think twice before you buy – do you really need it, or can you use something else you already have at home.

At school

We would like all of our community members to think about the waste they produce and try to reduce it.  On Friday, 29th March, Food waste in the canteen at lunchtime will be weighed.  Let’s try to see if we can get this under 10kg.  If we can do it today, we can do it every day!

If we all make small steps to reduce our waste, we can start to make a difference.
