Message from Head of School – Happy Holidays & Introducing New Staff

Friday 7th July 2022

Dear Parents and Students

We are in the final few hours of this academic year and we are looking forward to an optimistic 2022 – 2023. During this year, the support from parents, students and staff has been outstanding. I would like to sincerely thank everybody in the Bangkok Prep Community. I hope that you are all able to spend quality time with your family and loved ones. Please also indulge yourselves and spend some time on your own wellbeing. We will be very busy during the holiday period preparing the campuses for the next academic year.

The Bangkok Prep team is very busy preparing for the next academic year and we have some very exciting learning opportunities planned for the students at Bangkok Prep. The new Bangkok Prep teachers will be joining us in August 2022.  These high quality additions to our faculty will ensure that the students’ learning will be optimised and they will be able to achieve their potential. I am delighted to announce our new teachers for 2022 – 2023. I have included some information (in no particular order) and a short welcome message from them below:

Alastair MacDonald-Fraser – Primary EAL

  • PGCEi – Nottingham University
  • BA (Hons) Business Management- University of Southampton

My name is Alastair MacDonald-Fraser and I am thrilled to soon be joining Bangkok Prep as a primary EAL teacher. I am from a seaside town in the south west of England and have been living and teaching within Thailand for more than 11 years (including the last 4 in Bangkok-based international schools). It has been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to work with so many amazing students during that time. I have a love of the English language and thrive on being able to install a similar passion within the children I work with. These are the reasons why I am so excited to be taking on this position.

Outside of teaching, my main hobby is running, which I always try to make time for no matter how busy I am. I have participated in over 60 races during my time in Thailand, which has provided me with an excellent opportunity to explore the country. I am also an avid reader and have a love of both music and cinema.

I am greatly excited about joining such a respected and impressive school as Bangkok Prep, and cannot wait to meet everyone- especially the students!

Charlotte Holt – Primary Year 1

  • BA Politics from the University of Essex
  • Qualified Teachers Status – GTP Forest Independent Primary Collegiate

Hello parents and students of Bangkok Prep! I am very excited to be joining your community and getting to know you all.

I have been living and working in Thailand for 4 years as a teacher at Shrewsbury International School. I have enjoyed spending time exploring the beautiful city of Bangkok and teaching wonderful children. I am excited to continue this and start my next chapter by joining the Year 1 team at Bangkok Prep.

Before I moved to Bangkok, I worked across KS1 and Lower KS2 in Essex for 5 years and in Year 4 and 5 in London for 2 years.

I love teaching younger children and enjoy the energy, enthusiasm and personality they bring to their learning. My favourite subjects to teach are History and English as they both require a great deal of imagination.

In my spare time, I play hockey and rugby, as well as spending time with friends. Making connections and meeting new people is a wonderful part of Bangkok life, along with the opportunity to travel around South East Asia.

I am looking forward to meeting you in August!

David Bassett – Primary Year 6

  • BA (Hons) – Creative Writing – University of Winchester
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – Anton Andover Alliance

Hello to everyone at Bangkok Prep! My name is David Bassett, I am a primary teacher from the UK and I can’t wait to start working alongside you all later this year.

My teaching journey first started at the age of 14 when I began teaching Irish Dance classes under the instruction of the Blair McCarthy School of Irish Dance. When I retired from competition myself, I took my TCRG exam and started to open my own classes around Hampshire. At this time, I also acquired the position of an LSA and worked in Early Years before training to become a class teacher the following year.

Outside of the classroom, I like to maintain a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and continuing to teach Irish Dance. I like to write and have spent many hours volunteering as a content writer for charities and companies such as BBC Wildlife Magazine, World Animal Protection and Wildlife SOS (for whom I published a book in aid of). I have a strong passion for wildlife and have spent many trips volunteering at various sanctuaries across India, Zimbabwe and Thailand so I’m very much looking forward to making regular visits to see the elephants.

Irish Dance has taught me many valuable lessons in life and helped me to develop as a person, so I am extremely excited to introduce this art form to Bangkok Prep.

Hayley Hilne – Primary Year 4

  • PGCEi – The University of Nottingham
  • BA (Hons) in Motion Picture & Live Performance – AFDA University, Johannesburg

Hello my name is Hayley Hilne, and I am very excited to be joining Bangkok Prep. I am from Johannesburg in South Africa, but I have been living in Thailand for nearly 7 years and prior to that lived in London, England for 10 years. During my time in Bangkok, I have had the opportunity to work as an EAL teacher as well as being a full-time mother to my daughter, Mia.

Through working as an EAL teacher I really found my passion for working as a teacher. I have had the opportunity to work with so many different students and it has been a pleasure to help them learn and grow and I am excited to see this in my students at Bangkok Prep.

Outside of work and home I am a keen traveller and have had the opportunity to travel extensively as well as live in 3 different continents. Before Mia was born, I was part of the Bangkok community theatre and helped produce and take part in a variety of shows.

I am really looking forward to meeting all my new students, parents and colleagues very soon!

Jacob Rolfe – Primary Year 5

  • BA (Hons) Primary Education – York St John University

Hello, my name is Jacob Rolfe and I am incredibly excited to be joining Bangkok Prep as a KS2 teacher! I have been living and working in central Bangkok since August 2020; Thailand is definitely a second home to me now! Before teaching internationally, I taught for 4 years in a small primary school outside Manchester, UK.

Whilst I enjoy all subjects, my favourite to teach is definitely Maths! I love the wide range of questions and challenges that are on offer whilst seeing the children’s confidence grow throughout the year.

Some people may call me a social butterfly as I love to spend my spare time meeting up with my friends for dinner etc. Now that the borders have reopened, you will find me exploring the rest of SE Asia in our holidays and long weekends!

I very much look forward to continuing to develop my career at Bangkok Prep.

Kate Palmer – Primary Year 2

  • BA (Hons) in Education – Bath Spa University
  • PGCE in Primary Education – Brighton University

Hello my name is Kate Palmer and I am a qualified teacher from Hertfordshire, UK.

I grew up on a small farm and have always valued the importance of wildlife and the natural environment. In the past, I have spent many years campaigning to save the countryside in my local area. I also volunteer for a local conservation charity.

My mum was a Primary School Teacher and instilled a love of learning in me from an early age. It was because of her that I got my first job in a school at the age of 17. I would later go on to study Education and eventually gain QTS.

My dad was seriously ill throughout my teenage years, and this completely shaped my perspective on life. I try hard not to ‘sweat the small stuff’, value kindness above all else and (just like my dad would) try to find humour in everything. Even though I take my job seriously, I certainly would not describe myself as a serious person.

I currently live and work in Brighton – a city on the south coast of England. I love the diversity that Brighton has to offer and appreciate the different cultures and backgrounds that the children bring to the class. I enjoy working in Reception and take immense pride in being part of a child’s early years.

Away from the classroom, I enjoy an active lifestyle. I’m part of a volleyball team, I like to rock climb and, in the winter, I enjoy snowboarding.

Whilst I’m sad to be leaving my life in the UK, I’m also immeasurably excited to build a new one in Thailand. I can’t wait to be a part of the Bangkok Prep team!

Linda Owen – Primary Music

  • PGCE in Primary Education – Oxford Brookes University
  • BA honours degree in Music and History – Cardiff University

Hello my name is Linda Owen and since July 2018 until the present day, I have been working as a full time mother of two children. I had taken time out of my career to care for our children and ensure a secure foundation prior to them attending full time education. I am now ready to return to full time teaching as a Music Teacher!

I love teaching children music and love hearing them sing! In my roles as a Primary Music Teacher and Music Coordinator I have repeatedly and successfully organised school choirs, including IB and IGCSE level choirs, school bands, school orchestras and numerous recorder/woodwind clubs. Teaching music in Primary is where it all begins and where it should begin. I loved every minute of it! I am really looking forward to working with the music department. What will be a thrill for me is seeing our children in and around school. How time flies as it only seems like yesterday when I was on maternity leave from Bangkok Prep!

Finally, my main interests are with my family! However, I love music and try to continue playing as much as possible. I like to learn new instruments and I am keen in assisting in musical activities. I like keeping fit with running and have a fondness for travelling. I have especially enjoyed learning Mandarin in previous years and I am eager to continue with it.

I look forward to meeting you all.

Sasha Dodwell – Nursery

  • BA (Hons) History – University of Kent
  • PGDipEd Mathematics Specialist – University of Birmingham
  • MA Teaching Studies – University of Birmingham

My name is Sasha Dodwell and I am incredibly excited to be joining the team at Bangkok Prep and to continue living in Thailand, having been here for almost three years already. I have really enjoyed my time here so far and hope to stay in Bangkok for many years to come. Prior to moving to Thailand, I spent three years working in an international school in Kuwait and this afforded me the opportunity to travel all over the globe.

I hope to continue to see more of the world, and Southeast Asia in particular, as restrictions continue to ease. I am trained as a mathematics specialist but my passion lies in teaching the early years and I have completed a master’s degree looking at mathematics in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Outside of teaching, I enjoy playing piano, reading, running and going to events with friends.

I look forward to continuing my journey in Thailand and to meeting all my new students and colleagues in person very soon.

Stephen Hurworth – Deputy Head of Secondary

  • BSc Applied Sports Science – Loughborough University
  • PGCE Physical Education – University of Bedfordshire
  • MSB Coaching for Wellbeing 2022
  • Enhance Learning Senior Leaders 2020

Hello, my name is Stephen Hurworth. I am incredibly excited to be joining the Bangkok Prep community as Secondary Deputy Head Teacher next academic year. I was born and raised on Merseyside in the UK and have spent the last eleven years teaching internationally. Having lived and worked in Bangkok previously, I am fully aware of Bangkok Prep’s outstanding reputation, and I am relishing the opportunity to contribute to its continual growth.

For the last seven years, I have been working at Dulwich College Beijing, China, where I have been Head of Department, Head of Year, and in the previous four years, Assistant Head of the Senior School both as Head of IB Years and Student Wellbeing. Before my time in Beijing, I worked for four years in Bangkok as Head of PE and Head of Key Stage 3 at Heathfield International School.

I am looking forward to moving back to a country and city I love and where I met my wife. I am determined to further my Thai language skills, embrace the distinctive Thai culture, and fully immerse myself in the school community. I am a keen sportsman and a lover of all sports and fancy myself as a singer-songwriter. I look forward to meeting you all soon and wishing you all the best for the remainder of the academic year.

Akshika Bansal – Secondary Economics

  • Bachelor of Education, Maharshi Dayanand University, India
  • National Eligibility Test, University Grants Commission, India
  • Master of Arts (Economics), Gokhale Institute of Politics & Economics, India
  • Bachelor of Arts (Honours in Business Economics), University of Delhi

Hi, I am Akshika (I know it’s a tongue twister! You may call me Aki). Though I am originally from New Delhi, I moved to Bangkok in 2017 and have fallen in love with the land of smiles since. Before I decided to start teaching Economics, I worked as an education policy analyst at Centre for Civil Society (Delhi, India) which is amongst the world’s top 100 think tanks and has been a constant inspiration behind my teaching methods and philosophy.  I love travelling and experiencing different cultures, art, history, food and the like. I am elated that now we are again able to travel freely. Fingers crossed!

My mission is to make my students understand the ethos of Economics and teach it as a life skill instead of merely an academic subject. Thus, I feel very lucky to teach Economics every day and can’t wait to do so at Bangkok Prep. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and I will see you in the next academic year 2022.

Having successfully completed my iPGCE last year (and an MSc in East Asian Business at the University of Sheffield prior to that), I look forward to continuing to develop as an educator to benefit our wonderful students and outstanding learning community here at Bangkok Prep!

  • NPQ in Leading Behaviour and Culture

I have been teaching PE for 3 years and coaching Football for 9 years whilst also continuing to play. I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 2017 with a degree in Sports Development and Coaching, where I achieved a 1st class (Hons).

Upon finishing my undergraduate degree, I embarked on a travelling adventure, visiting South Africa, SE Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the USA. This gave me the urge to continue to gain new experiences in different countries and cultures. I am excited at the opportunity of coming back to Thailand with my Fiancée who is also a teacher.

I enjoy travelling, playing/watching sports and seeing new cultures. I am an avid Football (Manchester United) and Rugby league fan (Wigan Warriors), so you may see me sporting a replica shirt or two. I am hoping to connect with the whole Bangkok Prep community and excited to get started!

Karina Bual – Secondary Head of Psychology

  • Master’s in International Education – King’s College London, UK
  • PGCE Secondary Social Sciences specialising in Psychology – The Institute of Education, Manchester, UK
  • BA (Hons) Criminology – Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, UK

Hello, my name is Karina and I am delighted to be joining the Bangkok Prep community. I am originally from the UK, however, I am moving over to Bangkok from Malaysia, where I have been Head of Psychology in an international school in Kuala Lumpur for six years. Previous to this, I led Psychology departments in Italy, Vietnam and the UK. I am very excited to be able to share my passion for Psychology with the students at Bangkok Prep next year.

Other than the enjoyment of teaching my subject, I am a keen traveller and I love food and crafts. During the pandemic, I learnt to sew items of clothing from scratch and rekindled my love of painting. I also completed my Master’s degree in International Education at King’s College London. I think it is important to strive to be a positive global citizen and I enjoy immersing myself in the community. I actively work with charities who support the local community here in Malaysia and have also performed in theatre productions to raise money for local refugee centres. My most recent role was as a Munchkin in the Wizard of Oz! This is something that I would like to continue when I move to Thailand. I will be moving to Bangkok with my husband and my two cats, Leo and Gizmo. I can’t wait to meet you all soon.

Both I and my husband are excited to return to Thailand; although it will be a different experience as we are returning with our two daughters aged 3 years and 4 months! Outside of teaching, I love travelling, hiking and singing in choirs. I’m most looking forward to getting to eat more “khao niew ma muang”!

Jenny Key – Exams Officer

  • BSc(hons) Mathematics & Philosophy – University of Manchester
  • PGCE Secondary Mathematics – University of Cambridge
  • Master of Education – University of Western Australia

I have been living in Phuket and working at an international school since January 2019. Prior to that I spent 2 years at a Christian boarding school in rural Zambia, which followed 9 years as a mathematics teacher and Head of Mathematics in Perth, Western Australia. I speak some basic Thai, I play the trumpet and I have 2 adorable cats.

I love puzzles and challenges, such as completing a 1000-piece jigsaw or the daily “Wordle”, which is why organising the logistics for examinations is such a good fit for me. I pay attention to detail and I am very organised, but I also enjoy the opportunity to offer a human touch during what can be an incredibly stressful time for students, parents and teachers.

  • QTS in English – North West Lancashire GRTP Consortium, Lancaster.

For the last six years, I established myself at a smaller international school in Bangkok and feel I am ready to evolve in a bigger setting with a more wonderfully diverse population of students. Originally, I am from the north of England and although I do miss some aspects of the UK, I am completely in love with Bangkok and all it has to offer. This is now my home and I feel fortunate to live and work in such a vibrant city. I have a huge passion for literature and theatre and I also enjoy cooking and travelling in my spare time. • Design & Visual Arts Illustration – Stockport College
  • BTEC Art & Design Foundation – Manchester College
  • Digital Design, Distinction – Manchester College

Hello, my name is Lauren Jo Kelly, and as the new Secondary Art Teacher at Bangkok Prep I would love to take the time to introduce myself as we commence the new term. I am from Manchester, England and hold a Bachelor of Arts Undergraduate Degree in Photography, from Thailand, experimenting with my home cooking, or enhancing my pottery skills. With previous experience teaching in Chiang Mai and Bangkok, and with my love for Thailand, I have now chosen to continue my teaching career at Bangkok Prep.

I cannot wait to get to know the iconic city and surrounding areas, sample all the incredible food, and get to know the community at Bangkok Prep. I then went on to train as a Mathematics Teacher at University College London and will soon be in my fourth year of teaching. I pride myself on helping students reach their full potential and enjoy discussing the historical influences and the real-life applications of Mathematics.

So far, I have worked in England and the Middle East. I love travelling and experiencing new cultures so I look forward to adding Thailand to that list! • PGCE Secondary Education Science with Biology – Liverpool Hope University

Hi, my name is Sahdiya Pervez. I am originally from Yorkshire but moved to London and I am very excited to be making the move to Thailand and to start teaching at Bangkok Prep!

Outside of teaching I make Tik Toks, go for long walks and explore new places. I also love being a foodie and trying lots of different types of food!

I love teaching Science, particularly Biology and relating it to everyday life. I visited Thailand to complete my TEFL in 2017 and it’s been my dream to teach abroad so I cannot wait to get started!

Sarah Jones – Secondary UGC

  • Careers Guidance and Development
  • Leadership and Management (Education)
  • PGCE in Leadership and Management (Education) – University of New South Wales
  • FDN Business and Management – University of Glamorgan

I am beyond thrilled to be joining my teammates in University Guidance and the wider school community at Bangkok Prep this August! I have had the joy and privilege of working with young people, their parents and extended families across South East Asia, to prepare for university and beyond. I feel equally privileged and I am looking forward to supporting Bangkok Prep pupils, their parents and their families as they embark on decisions and applications for their next steps.

I have been working within the education sector for the last 21-years and couldn’t think of a better place to be.  I began my early career within tertiary education, before quickly moving into higher education where I spent a decade or so at Russell Group and non-Russell group institutions – it is estimated that I have read over 60,000 personal statements and applications within university roles alone!.  My time working for a leading sixth form college in the UK propelled me over the waters, anchoring in Hong Kong for the last 7-years:  I have worked with leading education consultancies, organisations, and local schools, and, to circumnavigate the challenges of the pandemic, successfully run two businesses; stretching careers guidance and support, across the web and water (UK – Asia), to young people restricted to the remote realm of education.

While I am dedicated and passionate about education and helping young people get the best start, I love to relax and travel, meet new people and learn new skills – I have been learning Mandarin for the last 3-years and look forward to adding Thai into the mix! (Welsh is still very much off-limits, despite my heritage).  I have quite an eclectic taste in most things but I have a particular appreciation for art and architecture; a penchant for arts and crafts (with my niece and nephews); I love to read and write; I enjoy the mental freedom gained through exercise; and most of all, I like eating!

My partner and I are very much looking forward to making our new home in Thailand, and I cannot wait to begin my new journey at Bangkok Prep, this summer; if you have the opportunity, come and say “hi”, I cannot wait to meet you!

We are delighted with the new additions to the Bangkok Prep teaching team and we can’t wait for them to meet the children in August.

Thank you

This is also the time of year where we need to say ‘Goodbye’ and ‘Thank you’ to some of our teachers that are moving onto the next exciting chapter in their professional careers. Without doubt, the school has grown in success and reputation during the years that these teachers have been at Bangkok Prep. I am sure you will join me in thanking them for their hard work and dedication to the students they have worked with during their tenure. Please find time to thank, in person, Andrew Duckworth, Daniel Guerrard, Elaine McMahon, Emily Webb, Emma Gricmanis, Jacqui Kyle, Martin Fletcher, Suzanne Freeman from the Primary team. In addition, please thank these Secondary teachers: Andrew Morton, Andrew Jackson, Dominic Proctor, Emma Marsh, Emma Parker, Jalila Moody, Kate Rice, Kerrie Nacey, Lucy Allen, Oliver Brewer, Olivia Gonzalez, Peter Green, Riett Kriel, Stephen Perry,  and of course our Deputy Head of Secondary Mr Josh Watters.  I am sure you will join me in applauding them all for their hard work and dedication to their roles at our school.

Warm regards

Duncan J Stonehouse
