Message from Head of school – Wednesday 6th January

Wednesday 6th January 2021

Dear Parents, Guardians, Teachers, and Staff

I am constantly impressed by the positive attitude that our students display during these times of adversity. I believe this is a clear indicator of the importance of our focus on the 11 Bangkok Prep life values especially problem solving, responsibility, resourcefulness, community minded, caring, and being a team worker, respectful and an active learner.  Bangkok Prep will continue to follow the guidance form the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Ministry of Education and the CCSA. Currently, schools will be unable to allow students back onto their campuses until the government agencies agree it is safe. I will share any relevant updates as they become available.

Great progress during online learning

We should all be extremely proud of the achievements of our children at Bangkok Prep, and we have every confidence in their ability to flourish during this period of online learning. In fact, during the last academic year’s period of online learning, all children continued to make the expected progress. The impressive ‘end of year’ results also support this sustained progress as do the I/GCSE, A Level results not to mention the offers from the very best universities from around the world. Please see this Constant and True 2020 publication for reassurance.

High Quality and Great Communication is the key to success

During this period of online learning, we need to make sure we talk to our children in a positive and optimistic way, thus enhancing their self esteem and ensuring their well being remains healthy. Clearly, communication is a challenge when our children are learning remotely and we will continue with our ‘three key teams’ system that we utilised during the last time students in Thailand were directed to learn at home. The reason this system was deemed as very successful by parents was mostly due to the regularity of the feedback from students, parents and staff. This feedback was quickly analysed so that solutions could be effectively communicated with our Bangkok Prep community.

In essence, the school leadership team will operate three key teams throughout the closure. These are:

The Communications Team: This group will be dedicated to all outward communications with all the community by letter, website, and social media. They will make sure we share things with you in a timely manner but that most importantly this communication is accurate, verified and clear.

The Learning and Support Team: This group will manage internal communication, logistical planning, resourcing, training and support for the students, teaching staff and admin staff. They will be responsible for ensuring everyone is clear on expectations, and ensure we can all deliver on these high expectations.

The Evaluation and Feedback Team: This group will set up communications with staff, students and parents to gather useful feedback and to ensure changes are made throughout the situation. They will help us to check attendance, the quality of learning, and how well we move from one phase to the next. They will recommend improvements and how we can help students and teachers work most effectively together.

During the last 12 months, there has been a huge amount of research within international schools to support the maintenance of the school timetable and term dates. In fact, in cases where some requests from parents to change term dates were met – over 60% of the parents then requested to return the dates back to the original dates for the academic year.  A maximum of 8 weeks and a minimum of 5 week terms are optimum for children’s learning whether it takes place at home or in school.

We must all continue to work together to support our children through these difficult times and ensure they continue to flourish in a positive learning environment.

Warmest regards

The school aims to prepare global citizens capable of facing life’s challenges in an ever-changing world. With a dedicated team of educators, Bangkok Prep sets high standards, encouraging students to dream big and work hard towards their goals.

Aligned with the National Curriculum of England and Wales, the school’s curriculum is adapted to reflect Thai culture and society. Teaching follows an innovative thematic approach, integrating real-life contexts with academic rigor to develop well-rounded individuals. Learning is personalized to cater to diverse abilities and talents, fostering mutual respect, trust, and inclusivity.

Bangkok Prep’s primary curriculum extends beyond statutory requirements, focusing on engaging cross-curricular themes to facilitate high-quality learning. The school aims to nurture students’ curiosity, helping them discover lifelong passions and talents while preparing them for a fulfilling future.

Admissions Procedure

When choosing Bangkok Prep for your child, you’re welcomed into the school family, ensuring a warm and supportive environment. The admissions process begins with completing a brief enquiry form, followed by an invitation for an introductory visit and tour. Conveniently located on Sukhumvit 77, Bangkok Prep offers both Primary and Secondary campuses. Upon deciding on Bangkok Prep, applicants submit their application form and required documents. Assessment sessions are then scheduled based on the applicant’s year level, ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours. The assessment includes various activities and tests tailored to different age groups. After assessment, the admissions team evaluates the application and notifies the family of the decision within 1-2 weeks. Successful applicants receive a formal offer letter and an invoice for initial fees, including placement, security, and registration fees, which must be paid within the specified timeframe to secure the child’s place.

Early Years

At Bangkok Prep, the Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework of England, emphasizing thematic topics and child-led learning for a stimulating and enjoyable school experience. It nurtures learning through play and focuses on developing concepts, skills, and positive attitudes across various areas including personal, social, emotional, communication, language, physical, literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world, and expressive arts and design. The curriculum prioritizes individualized learning, ensuring continuous progress while maintaining confidence and a can-do attitude. Specialist sessions in Thai language and culture, music, library, physical education, and swimming further enhance learning opportunities. Supervised by native English teachers and Thai-speaking teaching assistants, children immerse in language acquisition through the immersion method, preparing them for the international community. The Early Years program prioritizes outdoor learning environments, valuing them as essential for children’s wellbeing and development. It serves as ideal preparation for the transition into primary school and provides resources for parents on the Foundation Years website.

Secondary School

Bangkok Prep prides itself on being a distinct international secondary school in Bangkok, prioritizing student needs and providing a stimulating learning environment. Central to this is the pastoral system, where each student is assigned to a tutor group led by a Form Tutor, ensuring personalized care and support. The curriculum evolves to meet students’ changing needs, offering a core curriculum supplemented by option subjects as students mature. Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) focuses on a broad curriculum adapted from the English National Curriculum, fostering personal growth. In Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11), students choose option subjects alongside a core curriculum, culminating in IGCSE examinations. Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13) sees students specialize in Advanced Level courses while also engaging in a core curriculum and receiving support for university applications. Bangkok Prep fosters a warm, inclusive community and actively participates in regional competitions and events. The school encourages student involvement and leadership, ensuring a thriving learning environment. Contact information is provided for further inquiries.
