Semhar Ahdego – Meet our Teachers BKK Prep, News, Secondary, Whole School November 26, 2020 What made you want to embark upon a teaching career? Was there a particular moment or experience? I always found myself volunteering to tutor in secondary school – supporting peers or younger students academically was something I enjoyed early on. I started teaching because I wanted to make a difference in children’s lives. I have always loved children and I want to support their development both academically but most importantly, pastorally. During my teacher training, I knew I wanted to become that teacher who helped children learn to overcome challenges in Mathematics and to love the subject! Teaching is a rewarding job and I am very grateful every day I chose the profession. What inspired you to apply for the role of Year 7 Leader? The part of my job I enjoy the most is building positive relationships and learning interactions with students and being in the role of Year Leader allows you to do so beyond the classroom and with a wider range of students. I believe the position of Year 7 Leader is an important role and offers the opportunity to support students with the important transition of adjusting to life at secondary school, as such it is a role that I could not pass up. What do you enjoy the most about your job Apart from developing positive relationships with students – I love being in the classroom and teaching Maths! It is always the best part of my day when students leave the classroom feeling confident having learned a new skill. The management team at Bangkok Prep is extremely supportive and I am always impressed at the effort management put in to ensure everyone has an opportunity to achieve their potential. I also enjoy working with staff and parents at Bangkok Prep – there is a real sense of community amongst all members and it is fantastic to be a part of it. What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Outside of work I enjoy cooking, fitness, and spending time exploring the city. I have recently taken up golf and I am very much looking forward to continuing to play and improve. Biography I graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor’s Science Degree and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education specialising in Middle Years Education. Following this, I spent time working in both primary and secondary schools in London, UK. I made the move to international teaching in 2018, at Bangkok Prep, where I have enjoyed developing in roles such as Head of Surus, and PSHE Secondary Lead, and currently Year 7 Leader.
