The I/GCSE and Sixth Form Options Process at Bangkok Prep

We have an extensive, enriched and strategic options process at Bangkok Prep. Monday saw the commencement of the I/GCSE and Sixth Form Options process for our Year 9 and Year 11 students, respectively. Both year groups spent some of their time with the options process leader, Ms. Alison Cantrill, our Head of Careers and Student Pathways.

Over the next few months, all of our students will be deciding which subjects to study in the next two years at school. Ms. Cantrill discussed the importance of making informed decisions based on interest, passion and with our students’ future prospects in mind. The students also learnt about the different options blocks, how choosing subjects works and had the opportunity to learn about the options process timeline.

Our process is multi-layered with opportunities for both students and parents to engage in sessions designed to bolster the decision making process. These decisions are a big step in our students’ educational journey and we believe in supporting them to make informed and authentic choices which align with their strengths whilst informing future pathways. Here is a little more about what to expect in Year 9 and Year 11:

Options taster lessons

Over the next two weeks, our students are engaging in taster lessons during curriculum time and are hearing from faculty leaders, subject leads and teachers of subjects they haven’t yet had any exposure to. This is most notably the case for Humanities subjects. Monday was a fantastic example of this in action. After the presentation from Ms. Cantrill, our Year 9 students experienced a workshop style session with key members of the Humanities faculty. Within the subjects of Business, Economics and Psychology, students engaged in small tasks and activities and were then given a summary and explanation of the different subjects by the relevant teaching staff. It was a fantastic first exposure to these subjects and Mr. Groves and the team delivered some ultimately engaging mini lessons.

Options events our students can look forward to…

Moving forward we have lots of options events on the horizon for both year groups. During Tutor Times, students will have the opportunity to attend presentations about World Languages in Year 10 and 11, as well as BTEC pathways in Year 12 and Year 13. The Year 11 students will also be introduced to our Higher Education and University team and can book guidance counselling meetings to obtain bespoke advice specific to their pathways of interest. Below is a timeline of the process this year so that you are aware of the dates and events.

Options events on the horizon with parent engagement…

We look forward to welcoming our Year 9 parents on campus on Tuesday 8th November for the Year 9 SLC and both our Year 9 and 11 parents on campus for the options afternoon on Wednesday 30th November. This event is an exceptional way to find out more about our pathways offerings at Bangkok Prep and speak with the relevant staff members in charge of leading these areas. More information about this event will be shared two weeks in advance.

A huge thank you to Ms. Cantrill for her leadership and constantly improving the provision of the options process each year. Thanks also to all the staff and families involved in providing our students with sessions, lessons and extra support with making their decisions. We know these choices really matter and we are here to help you find the very best pathway for you.

Admissions Procedure

When choosing Bangkok Prep for your child, you’re welcomed into the school family, ensuring a warm and supportive environment. The admissions process begins with completing a brief enquiry form, followed by an invitation for an introductory visit and tour. Conveniently located on Sukhumvit 77, Bangkok Prep offers both Primary and Secondary campuses. Upon deciding on Bangkok Prep, applicants submit their application form and required documents. Assessment sessions are then scheduled based on the applicant’s year level, ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours. The assessment includes various activities and tests tailored to different age groups. After assessment, the admissions team evaluates the application and notifies the family of the decision within 1-2 weeks. Successful applicants receive a formal offer letter and an invoice for initial fees, including placement, security, and registration fees, which must be paid within the specified timeframe to secure the child’s place.

Early Years

At Bangkok Prep, the Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework of England, emphasizing thematic topics and child-led learning for a stimulating and enjoyable school experience. It nurtures learning through play and focuses on developing concepts, skills, and positive attitudes across various areas including personal, social, emotional, communication, language, physical, literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world, and expressive arts and design. The curriculum prioritizes individualized learning, ensuring continuous progress while maintaining confidence and a can-do attitude. Specialist sessions in Thai language and culture, music, library, physical education, and swimming further enhance learning opportunities. Supervised by native English teachers and Thai-speaking teaching assistants, children immerse in language acquisition through the immersion method, preparing them for the international community. The Early Years program prioritizes outdoor learning environments, valuing them as essential for children’s wellbeing and development. It serves as ideal preparation for the transition into primary school and provides resources for parents on the Foundation Years website.

Secondary School

Bangkok Prep prides itself on being a distinct international secondary school in Bangkok, prioritizing student needs and providing a stimulating learning environment. Central to this is the pastoral system, where each student is assigned to a tutor group led by a Form Tutor, ensuring personalized care and support. The curriculum evolves to meet students’ changing needs, offering a core curriculum supplemented by option subjects as students mature. Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) focuses on a broad curriculum adapted from the English National Curriculum, fostering personal growth. In Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11), students choose option subjects alongside a core curriculum, culminating in IGCSE examinations. Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13) sees students specialize in Advanced Level courses while also engaging in a core curriculum and receiving support for university applications. Bangkok Prep fosters a warm, inclusive community and actively participates in regional competitions and events. The school encourages student involvement and leadership, ensuring a thriving learning environment. Contact information is provided for further inquiries.
