The Smile Club at Bangkok prep has had an extremely busy and productive term, despite being online for half of it! We started the club with only 5 members – today the team consists of 33 hardworking individuals ready to make a change. The Smile Club is a group created to raise funds and awareness for Operation Smile – who carry out medical missions throughout the world to provide surgery to underprivileged kids with cleft lip/ palate.

We started off the academic year by celebrating World Smile Day (on October 1st) at Bangkok Prep online. Every tutor group submitted a smiley screenshot of the whole class showing off their best smile from Zoom. We then compiled this into a presentation where we explained that celebrating World Smile Day can be as simple as doing an act of kindness to make someone’s day! In addition, we advocated the important work Operation Smile has been doing, and what members of the Bangkok Prep community can do to help!

Since we were able to come back to school in the second half of term 1, the Smile Club hosted a Christmas event ‘Smile for Santa!’ where we organised socially distanced game booths during break times in the last week of school. The event was a massive hit, and we managed to raise a total of 26,485 Baht, which will be donated to Operation Smile! A huge thank you to everyone who participated in our games and donated to help. The booths were ‘Sponge Santa!’ where our fantastic teachers dressed up in their best festive costumes, only to be soaked with sponges filled with water. Another booth was ‘guess the number of candies in the jar’; here we challenged people to a game of estimate and luck. And our final booth was Bangkok Prep’s first ever tug of war tournament. We invited teams from year 7 to Year 13 to compete in a game of tug of war to find out who is the ‘strongest’ at Bangkok Prep. All in all, we, the smile club, could not be any happier with the outcome of our first ever event! It was great to see the whole school come together to play some Christmas themed games!
