USA University Fair & Higher Education Updates 15.09.2023

The KIC UnivAssist University Tour visited Bangkok Prep on Monday, 11 September. Twenty prestigious universities from the United States and Canada visited Bangkok Prep for a university fair. The fair had excellent attendance, with more than one hundred secondary students, parents, teachers and staff visiting the fair. Many of the students at Bangkok Prep are currently applying to universities in the United States and Canada. One of the fun aspects of the fair was a treasure hunt, in which students had to match fun facts to a corresponding university, with the winner earning a Starbucks voucher. Universities included Michigan State University, Pace University, University of Connecticut, Milwaukee School of Engineering, and more.

USA College Essay Writing Workshop

On Wednesday, 6 September, 2023, the Higher Education office held a College Essay Writing workshop. The workshop was offered after school to students in Year 13, as part of the university application process. Students learned about the college essay writing process, best practices, and got personalised feedback from their counsellors. Students also were able to receive individualised guidance about university applications and life in the USA in general. Many students are currently applying to universities in the United States.

Y12 Parent HE Forum

On September 14, 2023 the Higher Education Office organised our first Year 12 Parent Discussion Forum of the year. During this session, we had a lively discussion about how we can support our students in selecting their majors, making use of various application platforms and engaging in family conversations about shortlisting universities. We also delved into the possibilities of utilising AI to navigate the complex application procedures. We sincerely hope that more parents will join us in our upcoming HE events.

This is an opportunity for students and parents to join up to three panel discussions to learn more about UK university admissions, financing, and student life from 20 universities from the UK. This is open to students, parents, and families.

Panel Sessions:

Writing a personal statement

Students applying for admissions at UK universities are required to submit a personal statement. What information do you need to include? How do you make your personal statement stand out? How is the personal statement used in the admissions process?

Funding a UK university education:

Show me the money! This panel discussion covers the costs of UK university education. How much is university tuition? How much should I budget for living expenses? Are scholarship and bursary opportunities available for international students?

Choosing a course

How do I choose the right university course? This panel discusses the process of choosing the right course for you depending on your current curriculum choices, expected grades and exam results, and future goals.

The UK experience

What is life in the UK like? Do they drink tea every day? Are there really red double decker buses everywhere? Whether you are interested in London or the countryside, there are many brilliant places to live and study. In this presentation, our admissions officers will chat about what life in the UK is like and what you can expect living in the country.

Life as an international student

Moving to university in another country is a big decision. In this panel, we will discuss topics related to diversity, living far away from home, adjusting to other cultures, university resources for international students, and more.

If you will be entering into Medicine, Dentistry, Education, or a similar programme, you will be required to interview with an admissions tutor. Certain universities also require interviews depending upon the course. In this panel, we discuss the interview process and how to do your best interviewing with the admissions team.

Admissions Procedure

When choosing Bangkok Prep for your child, you’re welcomed into the school family, ensuring a warm and supportive environment. The admissions process begins with completing a brief enquiry form, followed by an invitation for an introductory visit and tour. Conveniently located on Sukhumvit 77, Bangkok Prep offers both Primary and Secondary campuses. Upon deciding on Bangkok Prep, applicants submit their application form and required documents. Assessment sessions are then scheduled based on the applicant’s year level, ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours. The assessment includes various activities and tests tailored to different age groups. After assessment, the admissions team evaluates the application and notifies the family of the decision within 1-2 weeks. Successful applicants receive a formal offer letter and an invoice for initial fees, including placement, security, and registration fees, which must be paid within the specified timeframe to secure the child’s place.

Early Years

At Bangkok Prep, the Early Years curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework of England, emphasizing thematic topics and child-led learning for a stimulating and enjoyable school experience. It nurtures learning through play and focuses on developing concepts, skills, and positive attitudes across various areas including personal, social, emotional, communication, language, physical, literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world, and expressive arts and design. The curriculum prioritizes individualized learning, ensuring continuous progress while maintaining confidence and a can-do attitude. Specialist sessions in Thai language and culture, music, library, physical education, and swimming further enhance learning opportunities. Supervised by native English teachers and Thai-speaking teaching assistants, children immerse in language acquisition through the immersion method, preparing them for the international community. The Early Years program prioritizes outdoor learning environments, valuing them as essential for children’s wellbeing and development. It serves as ideal preparation for the transition into primary school and provides resources for parents on the Foundation Years website.

Secondary School

Bangkok Prep prides itself on being a distinct international secondary school in Bangkok, prioritizing student needs and providing a stimulating learning environment. Central to this is the pastoral system, where each student is assigned to a tutor group led by a Form Tutor, ensuring personalized care and support. The curriculum evolves to meet students’ changing needs, offering a core curriculum supplemented by option subjects as students mature. Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) focuses on a broad curriculum adapted from the English National Curriculum, fostering personal growth. In Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11), students choose option subjects alongside a core curriculum, culminating in IGCSE examinations. Key Stage 5 (Years 12-13) sees students specialize in Advanced Level courses while also engaging in a core curriculum and receiving support for university applications. Bangkok Prep fosters a warm, inclusive community and actively participates in regional competitions and events. The school encourages student involvement and leadership, ensuring a thriving learning environment. Contact information is provided for further inquiries.
