Wai Kru Day is coming! - Bangkok Prep

Wai Kru Day is coming!

“Wai” is a small word, but it contains a significant and warm meaning to all Thai people. A Wai is used for greeting, apologising and thanking, but it is also used for showing respect, appreciation and personal gratitude. The Wai is considered to be a symbolic practice for students on this important day called “Wai Kru Day”. On this day, the children reflect upon all the things which their teachers do for them.

Wai Kru day always occurs on Thursday. This is because there is an astrological rule (which has influence from Hindu mythology) that assigns the orange colour to Thursday based on the colour of the Bṛhaspati, the God who protects Thursday. He is considered a Guru (teacher) by all the Devas (celestial beings from Hinduism). That is why we hold our Wai Kru ceremony on Thursday and why the colour orange is considered as a symbol of the day.

What Bangkok Prep is going to do to mark the importance of this day?

Representative students from each class will offer flower garlands to the teachers and all academic staff to show respect and gratitude towards all of them.

Every child in the school will attend our Wai Kru ceremony to mark the importance of this day together.

The Thai Department would like to encourage all teaching staff to wear something orange, such as an orange shirt, necktie, dress or clothes on Wai Kru Day this year. The event will be held on September 22nd 2022 at 08:15 in our Sports Hall @53 and Thursday 29 September 2022  at Secondary.

We are all very much looking forward to seeing all of our teachers and children in attendance at our warm and meaningful “Wai Kru” ceremony.  As this is our first whole school event, and our first time of all coming together, unfortunately we are not able to invite parents to join us on this occasion.
