Women in Maths Day 2024 - Bangkok Prep

Women in Maths Day 2024

Earlier this month in the Mathematics faculty we celebrated International Women in Maths Day for the second year running. This is a day to celebrate and honour women in the Mathematics community that takes place on the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first female to win the Fields Medal.

Women in Mathematics needs to be celebrated, not only to give credit where credit is due, but to also encourage young girls to want to pursue careers in Math. Based on questionnaire results by UNESCO, Bangkok, in the seven Asian countries of focus, girls reported higher rates of anxiety regardless of whether they performed higher or lower than their male counterparts in Maths or Science. Whether in education or the workplace, the proportion of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) decreases dramatically at the highest levels.

This is why under Miss Saghir’s direction we decided to highlight women in Maths day: our students took part in various activities to teach students about famous female mathematicians and their contributions to the field. And after researching many female mathematicians, the students found that being a female comes with many challenges when pursuing a Mathematical education or career. The students made posters to create awareness about female mathematicians and how to improve gender equality in the future.

The Math Department would also like to thank Bangkok Prep’s Head Girl, Pream Masirivirojkul, and Deputy Head Girl, Kwan-Kao Kansiri, for their significant roles in the event. Pream and Kwan-Kao conducted  interviews with their peers in preparation for Women in Maths Day.  The video of these interviews (which has been edited by Alicia North and Flan Kopitz) can be watched below:

Another thank you to the following female mathematicians for creating and performing inspirational speeches for their Year Groups: Amara Glenwright, Fumika Katsuta, Fana Hofmann, Rasa Kanazawa, Earn Pipitsupaphol, Prim Eualapan, Sumin Noh, Ploydao Narongsorasak, Mita Tarnvanichkul, Si Yee, Ritika Kundnani, Yaashna Busari and Serafina Celia Samalo. They made an immense effort throughout this past week and the Math Department is very proud of them!

The students started their journey by attending a Public Speaking Workshop, held by Pream and Kwan-Kao, and then using this expertise, the students then researched, prepared and rehearsed their speeches with Ms Saghir. One written example by Mita and Ploydao can be read here: WIM Student Speech

The students finally performed their speeches and their Year Leaders were incredibly impressed. Mr Inns was especially impressed with the confidence and passion the students had while performing their speeches, but mostly, the engagement from peers that these inspirational speeches about Women in Maths evoked.

Special thanks to Miss Safia Saghir for organising the activities and encouraging the students to actively partake in the opportunities on offer.

“I like crossing the imaginary boundaries people set up between different fields.”
