Year 10 Students Explore Chinese Language and Culture at Peking Restaurant

On Monday, June 10th, the Year 10 students embarked on an exciting educational journey to Peking Restaurant. Organised by the Mandarin Department, this field trip was designed to provide students with a hands-on experience to enhance their understanding of Chinese language and culture, in line with the IGCSE curriculum.

Upon arrival at the restaurant, the students were greeted warmly by the staff and immediately immersed in a series of engaging activities. The highlight of the visit was the opportunity for students to practise their Chinese language skills in a real-world setting by ordering food in Chinese. This practical application of their classroom learning not only bolstered their confidence but also improved their conversational skills.

In addition to ordering food, the students were given a unique experience by learning how to make traditional Chinese dumplings. Guided by the restaurant’s chefs, they mastered the art of dumpling folding and enjoyed tasting their handmade creations. This hands-on activity provided a deeper appreciation for Chinese cuisine and its cultural significance.

Moreover, coinciding with the Dragon Boat Festival, students also had the opportunity to experience the traditional food called “zong zi,” adding another layer of cultural enrichment to their trip.

The cultural immersion continued with an enjoyable session on Chinese songs and various games, which further engaged the students in a fun and educational manner.

To wrap up the trip, students created vibrant posters capturing their experiences and learnings from the day. These posters will be displayed in the Mandarin Department, serving as a visual reminder of the cultural and educational insights gained during the trip.

The field trip to Peking Restaurant was an invaluable opportunity for the Year 10 students to deepen their appreciation of Chinese culture and enhance their language skills in an interactive and enjoyable manner. We look forward to more such engaging and educational activities in the future.
