Prep football bids farewell to a legend

On Saturday 10 June, the Bangkok Prep staff football team entered the fiercely contested Regent’s Cup. The occasion marked the end of an era as defensive colossus, and Prep team founder, Steve Rudall bid farewell in his final outing.

The tournament started promisingly for Prep. Two early goals from Simon Callow led to a 3-0 victory against the host team. In the next game, Prep again performed valiantly earning a 2-2 draw against a talented NIST.

Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain their early momentum and lost 1-0 to the eventual winners, Traill, in their third outing despite a mighty defensive performance from ‘Chopper’ Rudall.

Facing a powerful attack, Chopper was at his ruthless best, foiling wave after wave of pressure with his trademark tackling; eventually earning himself a well deserved yellow card.

It all came down to the final group game. Needing to beat Bromsgrove to go through to the semi-finals, a tired Prep, despite an outstanding performance from the evergreen Hugh Pollock, were unable to find a goal and could only muster a 0-0 draw.

Despite creating chance after chance, it just wasn’t meant to be. A disappointing end to a day that had promised so much, but a superlative tournament performance from a player that will be sorely missed.
