Dear Parents and Guardians, On Tuesday, 27th May, we will be welcoming the Breck Foundation to our school to deliver an online safety presentation to our Secondary students. The Breck Foundation is a specialist charity founded following the tragic loss of 14-year-old Breck Bednar, who was groomed and murdered by someone he met online. Their mission is to educate young people on the dangers of online grooming and exploitation. Parent session: Tuesday, 26th May To support our families, there is an online session for parents and guardians on the evening before the student presentation. This session will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, 26th May, from 18:00 to 19:00. Attending this talk will help you understand the content being shared with your children and provide practical advice on how to maintain open lines of communication regarding their digital habits. You can join the meeting at the scheduled time using the following link: Zoom Meeting Link. What the student session will cover The presentation for our students is carefully tailored to be age-appropriate for Key Stage 3.The hour-long session will include:Breck’s Story: A sensitive but detailed account of the events surrounding Breck’s experience.Recognizing Grooming: Practical information on how to spot the signs of grooming on social media and gaming platforms.Safety in Gaming: Specific guidance on staying safe while playing online.Reporting and Support: Ensuring students know how to speak up and where to find help if they have concerns.Wider Risks: Contextual information on related digital threats, including sextortion, county lines, and radicalisation. As part of this session, students will watch the film Breck’s Last Game. While this film carries a 15 certificate for cinematic use, it is widely recognized as a powerful educational tool when delivered by trained facilitators. Parental Engagement We strongly encourage you to speak with your child following the presentation. It is an excellent opportunity to open a dialogue about their digital lives, reassure them that they can talk to you about any concerns, and remind them to look out for their friends. Please see below the foundation's flyer to this email for your reference. For further information about the content of these sessions, please visit the foundation’s website at www.breckfoundation.org. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our students safe in the digital world. Regards, Jake McIntosh Assistant Headteacher Secondary (Wellbeing)
