Our Year 12 students recently swapped their keyboards for canine companions during an insightful visit to a local dog training and care facility. The trip provided a first-hand look at the complex day-to-day operationsof a specialised service business, ranging from managing real-time kennel bookings and veterinary records to the overarching management of staff schedules and client billing.By observing the flow of data—from the moment a dog is checked in —students gained a vital "real-world" example for their Computer Systems coursework. This experience was designed to help them identify specific pain points in manual or legacy systems, enabling them to propose sophisticated hardware and software upgrades, such as integrated cloud databases, use of smart phone, or tablet-based tracking for trainers. It was a rewarding morning that bridged the gap between abstract technical requirements and the practical needs of a thriving local business.
