Jake McIntosh, Assistant Head Secondary (Wellbeing) & Ashley Woods, Head of Year 7Year 6 spent their Tuesday at the Secondary campus, taking part in their second formal transition event of the year. The transition from Year 6 to Year 7 is arguably one of the most significant for children, given there is so much change that happens.Students in Year 7 have a variety of different subjects, over 15 different teachers, have the responsibility of moving from class to class independently and have increased academic responsibilities.Year 7 students are also the youngest people on the Secondary school site, not long after being the eldest students at Primary School. At Bangkok Prep we invest the time to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible. Please see some of the key areas of support: Transition event 1 - In term 1 we invited year 6 students to get to know the Secondary campus. They met key staff, participated in a scavenger hunt to get to know important locations and took part in a question and answer session with our year 7 leaders. Transition event 2 - This week on Tuesday Year 6 took part in four full lessons. They had a combination of Art or Drama, History or Geography, Computing, and a House event that was designed and managed by our fantastic Year 7 leadership team. Highlights from this event, apart from the interesting and fun lessons, was the access to the vending machines on the Secondary campus. Transition event 3 (June 2nd, 2026) - This is the final event for our Year 6 students and is a significant step up from earlier events. On this day, Year 6 arrive to and leave from school by themselves. This can be using the school transport, travelling with parents, guardians or friends, or, as some brave children do, by BTS and shuttle bus. On this day students will learn English, Maths, PE, Music, Science and World Languages. Some obstacles our Year 6 students will need to navigate are the transitions between lessons which they will be responsible for themselves, the traffic when moving around the school, and the size of the other students they will be travelling next to. Other Faculty events - There are loads of other transition events that happen throughout the year including co-òteaching of lessons by Secondary school teachers, Music and Drama events that include Year 6 in their preview events, language taster lessons to help Year 6 choose which languages they wish to learn and more. Buddy system for new students - Our existing students are sometimes asked to be a buddy for any new students joining the school. New students are paired with two buddies, and these are people that share similar backgrounds and/or interests.Buddies are responsible for making the first days in a new school feel manageable, and for ensuring the new students are well supported in all aspects of school life. Having well established transition practices ensures our Year 6 and soon to be Year 7 students are given the best chance at succeeding at Secondary School. It was an absolute pleasure to have Year 6 with us at the Secondary School this week and are feeling incredibly excited to welcome them to the campus permanently next academic year. For parents and guardians with any questions about this incredibly important transition, please feel free to contact your student’s teacher, or Jake McIntosh and Ashley Woods from the Secondary School
