Stephen Hurworth – Meet our Teachers

Welcome to back to the first of our Meet our Teachers series for this academic year. This week we meet Stephen Hurworth, our new Deputy Head of Secondary, to find out a bit more about him:

“I am currently in my 12th year of international education. Before spending seven years teaching in Beijing, I was Head of PE and Key Stage 3 in another international school in Bangkok. I met my wife here and we couldn’t be happier to be returning to a place we call home.

I have held a variety of leadership roles in Beijing, including Head of Department, Head of Year and in the last four years, I was an Assistant Head in both an academic and pastoral capacity.

My educational philosophy is built on positive, professional relationships that enhance the teaching and learning process. I can’t wait to lead this thriving community and positively contribute to its continual growth”.

What made you want to embark upon a teaching career? Was there a particular moment or experience?

I used to play to quite a high level of cricket as a youth and had dreams and aspirations to be the next Andrew Flintoff. After 6th form at School, I took a gap year to play cricket in Sydney, Australia. I played for Randwick Petersham who play in the Sydney Grade competition. I was also the cricket development officer, responsible for delivering coaching sessions in the local area and often coached at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It quickly became apparent that I wouldn’t make it as a professional and my love for teaching and coaching really blossomed. Knowing that I could make an impact on someone’s skill level, character and mindset through building positive and professional relationships, really inspired me to want to become a teacher.

What inspired you to apply for the role of Deputy Head of Secondary?

My first international post was in Bangkok in 2011 and I first came across Bangkok Prep in the local TISAC sports competitions, so I knew back then it was a great school and strong community. I also met my wife here in Bangkok so we have fond memories of living here. What really inspired me though was Bangkok Prep’s emphasis on a holistic education that catered for every student. Ms. Court-Smith and Mr. Stonehouse spent a lot of time getting to know me as a person and my leadership style during the interview which instilled a confidence that Bangkok Prep was about people and that culture and community are the most important component of any flourishing school.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

The prospect of being able to make a positive impact. Prep is already a magnificent school with exceptional students, staff and parents but all schools have the capacity to continually improve. I feel I can contribute to the school’s continual growth, development and improvement. As a leader it is essential the relationships I form are positive, professional and in the best interests of our students.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I am a lover of all sports but I currently play golf, cricket and football. I also fancy myself as a bit of a singer songwriter and enjoy playing the guitar and singing. I am a massive Liverpool FC fan.
